HVAC FAQ for Stamford, CT: Heating and AC Questions
Short, honest answers to the questions people ask most about furnaces, air conditioners, ductless systems, ducts and thermostats. If yours is not here, contact us and ask.
Cooling and AC
Why is my air conditioner running but not cooling?
Common causes include a clogged air filter, a tripped breaker for the outdoor unit, a thermostat set to fan instead of cool, or an outdoor unit choked by leaves and grass clippings. Check those first. If the house still will not cool down, a technician needs to inspect the system, because the cause may be a failed part or a frozen coil hidden inside the equipment.
Should I turn off my AC if I see ice on it?
Yes. Switch cooling off at the thermostat and let the ice melt on its own. Ice on the lines or the indoor coil usually points to an airflow problem or another fault, and running the system while frozen can lead to more damage. Check the filter, and call for service if the ice comes back.
How do I know whether to repair or replace my AC?
Age, how often it breaks down and the condition of the major parts all matter. A single failed part on a younger system is often worth fixing, while an older unit with repeated problems may be ready for replacement. Your technician can give you free estimates for both paths so you can compare.
How often should central air be serviced?
Once a year is a common recommendation, ideally in spring before the first hot stretch. A tune-up gives a technician the chance to clean, test and spot worn parts while the weather is still mild.
Heating
My furnace is not producing heat. What can I check first?
Make sure the thermostat is set to heat and above the current room temperature, and replace its batteries if the screen is blank. Check the breaker and the furnace service switch, and look at the air filter, since a badly clogged filter can cause a furnace to shut itself off. Do not open burner panels or try to reset safety controls, and call for service if these basics do not help.
What should I do if I smell gas near my furnace?
Leave the house right away and bring everyone with you. Call 911 or your gas utility from outside, and do not use light switches, appliances or phones while you are still inside. Once the gas company clears the home, contact us to inspect the heating equipment.
Do I need carbon monoxide alarms with a gas furnace?
Carbon monoxide alarms are a smart idea in any home with fuel-burning equipment, with at least one near the sleeping areas and one on each level. Test them regularly and replace them on the schedule the manufacturer lists. If an alarm goes off, get everyone outside and call 911.
Why does my furnace keep turning on and off?
Short cycling can come from a clogged filter, a thermostat in a poor location, a dirty flame sensor or a furnace that is too large for the house. Some of those are simple fixes and some are not, so a technician has to check it in person to know for sure.
Ductless, ducts and thermostats
Is a ductless mini-split a good fit for my home?
Mini-splits work well in spaces that ductwork does not reach, like additions, finished attics, sunrooms, converted garages and older homes that were never built with ducts. Each indoor unit heats and cools the room it is mounted in. A technician can look at the space and give you a free estimate for the layout.
When does duct cleaning make sense?
It is worth considering after a renovation that kicked up a lot of dust, if you see debris or buildup coming out of the vents, or if pests have gotten into the ductwork. A technician can look inside the ducts and tell you whether cleaning, repair or both would help.
Why are some rooms always too hot or too cold?
Uneven temperatures often trace back to the ductwork: leaky or disconnected runs in an attic or basement, closed or blocked vents, or rooms that were added without enough duct capacity. Thermostat placement can play a part too. Finding the cause usually takes an in-person look at the ducts and airflow.
Can you install a new thermostat on my existing system?
Usually, yes. Your technician checks the wiring and the type of equipment first, because some thermostats need an extra wire or specific settings to run a furnace and air conditioner correctly. The new thermostat is then set up and tested so you know it controls the system properly.
Estimates, scheduling and 24/7 service
What does a free estimate cover?
A free estimate explains the work your technician recommends, such as a repair, a replacement or new ductwork, so you can see what is involved before you agree to anything. That is also the right moment to ask questions and compare options.
Can I call at night or on a holiday?
Yes. Stamford HVAC Pros is available 24/7, including nights, weekends and holidays. A furnace that quits during a cold snap or an air conditioner that fails in a heat wave is exactly what that availability is for.
How do I schedule a visit?
Call us or use the contact form, and tell us what the system is doing and which town you are in. We will set up a time that works for you.
What counts as an HVAC emergency?
No heat in cold weather, no cooling when the heat is risky for someone in the home, water leaking from equipment, burning smells or a system that will not shut off. A gas odor or a carbon monoxide alarm is a 911 call first, so get outside before calling anyone else.
Service area
Which towns do you serve?
All 23 towns in Fairfield County, Connecticut. That runs from Greenwich, Stamford and Norwalk along the coast up to Danbury, Bethel, Brookfield and Sherman in the north.
Do you work in every Stamford neighborhood?
Yes. That includes Downtown and Harbor Point, Shippan and Cove by the water, Springdale and Glenbrook, and North Stamford areas such as Long Ridge, Scofieldtown and Turn of River.
Do you work on homes near the shoreline?
Yes. Salt air and wind can be hard on outdoor equipment in waterfront areas like Shippan, Cove and parts of Westport and Fairfield. Keeping the outdoor unit clear and having it checked during regular maintenance is worth the effort there.
Do you service condos and apartments in Downtown Stamford?
Yes. Downtown buildings and condo associations often have their own rules about access, parking and outside contractors, so it helps to check with management before the visit.
