Stamford HVAC Pros offers 24/7 HVAC repair in Stamford, CT and across Fairfield County, including nights, weekends and holidays. When to call

Situations that count as an HVAC emergency

Not every problem needs a middle-of-the-night visit, but these usually should not wait.

  • No heat in freezing weather, especially with infants, older adults or pets
  • No cooling during a heat wave when someone at home is vulnerable
  • A burning, electrical or hot plastic smell from vents or equipment
  • Loud banging, grinding or screeching from the furnace or outdoor unit
  • Water leaking from the indoor unit near ceilings, floors or wiring
  • A carbon monoxide alarm going off (get everyone outside first)

What happens

How an emergency call works

Here is what to expect from the moment you reach us.

Call and describe it

Tell us what the system is doing, any smells or noises, and whether anyone in the home is at risk from the heat or cold.

Stay safe while waiting

Turn the system off at the thermostat if you smell burning or hear grinding, and stay clear of the equipment until your technician gets there.

Diagnose on site

Your technician tracks down the cause, explains what failed in plain language and goes over the options for getting heat or cooling back.

Repair or make safe

If the repair can be done on the spot, it gets done with your approval. If it needs a part or a bigger fix, the system is left safe and you know the next step.

What to do while you wait for your technician

If the heat is out in winter, close curtains and blinds, shut interior doors to hold warmth in the rooms you are using, and gather everyone in one room with blankets. Use space heaters only as their instructions direct, keep them well away from bedding and curtains, and never use a gas oven, grill or outdoor heater to warm the house.

If the AC is out during a heat wave, close blinds on sunny windows, run fans, drink plenty of water, and spend time on the lowest floor, which is usually the coolest. If anyone shows signs of heat illness, such as confusion, dizziness or a very high body temperature, call 911.

In either case, a few safe checks are worth trying: make sure the thermostat is set correctly and has working batteries, look for a tripped breaker in the electrical panel, and confirm the power switch near the furnace or air handler is on. If a breaker trips again right after you reset it, leave it off and tell your technician.

Gas smells, carbon monoxide and other safety warnings

If you smell gas or a rotten-egg odor, do not go looking for the source. Leave the home right away, do not flip light switches, use phones or start anything that could spark, and call 911 or your gas utility once you are outside. Stay out until they tell you it is safe to go back in.

A sounding carbon monoxide alarm is always a reason to get everyone outside into fresh air and call 911. Carbon monoxide has no smell, so a working alarm may be the only warning you get. Keep CO alarms on every level of the home and near sleeping areas, and test them regularly.

A burning or electrical smell from the furnace, air handler or vents calls for a different response. Turn the system off at the thermostat, and if you see smoke or the smell grows stronger, leave and call 911. Once everyone is safe, contact us so your technician can find the cause.

FAQ

Common questions

How soon can a technician get to me?

That depends on the time of day, the weather and how many calls are coming in, so we will not promise a time we cannot keep. When you call, ask about timing and you will get an honest answer based on what that day looks like. If anyone is in danger from heat, cold, gas or carbon monoxide, call 911 first.

Is my situation really an emergency?

No heat in freezing weather, no cooling while someone vulnerable is home, water leaking near electrical parts, or a burning smell should all be treated as urgent. If the system is running but not quite keeping up, it can often wait for a regular appointment. When in doubt, call us and describe what is happening.

Should I keep resetting my furnace or AC if it shuts off?

No. Resetting it once at the thermostat or breaker is reasonable, but repeated shutdowns usually mean a safety control is doing its job. Leave the system off and let your technician find out why.

Is emergency service available on holidays?

Yes. Service is available 24/7, including nights, weekends and holidays, across Fairfield County. Cold snaps and heat waves do not follow the calendar, so the schedule does not either.

My AC stopped and there is ice on the pipes. What should I do?

Turn cooling off at the thermostat, and if your thermostat allows it, set the fan to on to help the ice melt. Do not chip at the ice or keep running the AC while it is frozen. A very dirty air filter is a common culprit, so check it while you wait, but a technician still needs to find the underlying cause.
